Roughly by human values we mean whatever it is that causes people to choose one option over another in each case, suitably corrected by reflection, with differences between groups of people taken into account. AI researchers debate the ethics of sharing potentially harmful programs Nonprofit lab OpenAI withheld its latest research, but was criticized by others in the field By James Vincent Feb 21, 2019, A related misconception is that supporting AI safety research is hugely controversial. In fact, to support a modest investment in AI safety research, people don’t need to be convinced that risks are high, merely non-negligible — just as a modest investment in home insurance is justified by a non-negligible probability of the home burning down. The EU regulations would require companies using AI for high-risk applications to provide risk assessments to regulators that demonstrate their safety.

Evidence law structures high-stakes arguments with human judges. The prima facie reason that Evidence law (“Evidence”) is relevant to Debate is because Evidence is one of the few areas, like Debate, where debates have high stakes: potentially including severe criminal penalties or In practice, whether debate works involves empirical questions about humans and the tasks we want AIs to perform, plus theoretical questions about the meaning of AI alignment. We report results on an initial MNIST experiment where agents compete to convince a sparse classifier, boosting the classifier's accuracy from 59.4% to 88.9% given 6 pixels and from 48.2% to 85.2% given 4 pixels. Alayna and I disagreed about whether or not this is a good thing.

IoT sensors – supported by artificial intelligence (AI) – will turn safety products such as workwear, alarms and personal protective equipment into revolutionary assets. These assets will have built-in sensors that can monitor everything, from safety alarms and weather to the location and wellbeing of the workers wearing them. 2019-03-20 · Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety can be broadly defined as the endeavour to ensure that AI is deployed in ways that do not harm human ity. This definition is easy to agree with, but what does it actually mean? Well, to complement the many ways that AI can better human lives, there are unfortunately many ways that AI can cause harm. Most of us believe that decisions that affect us should be made rationally: they should be reached by following a reasoning process that combines data we trust with a logic that we find acceptable. As long as human beings are making these decisions, we can probe at that reasoning to find out whether we agree with it.

Evan Hubinger on Inner Alignment, Outer Alignment, and Proposals

Download PDF. Abstract: To make AI systems broadly useful for challenging real-world tasks, we need them to learn complex human goals and preferences. One approach to specifying complex goals asks humans to judge during training which agent behaviors are safe and useful, but this approach can fail if the task is too complicated for a human to directly judge. If debate or a similar approach works, it will make future AI systems safer by keeping them aligned to human goals and values even if AI grows too strong for direct human supervision.

As I read the paper I found myself wanting to give commentary on it, and LW seems like as good a place as any to do that.
