During the 806 Viking attack, 68 monks were massacred in Martyrs' Bay. As a result, many of the monks relocated to a new Abbey of Kells in Ireland. For Iona the crisis deepened two years later, when a Viking fleet raided the west coast of Scotland and sailed into the Irish Sea. The Annals of Inisfallen claim that Iona itself was devastated. Five years later, in 802, the monastery was burned, but far worse was to come: 68 members of the community were killed during an attack in 806. On either side of Northern Britain lie the holy islands of Iona and Lindisfarne. Both have been attracted by archaeologists, historians and pilgrims for centuries, and both were exposed to the marauding attacks of the Vikings at the close of the 8th Century.

By around 900AD, the Vikings had settled in the area, embraced Christianity and adopting St Columba as their patron saint.
